The Land
The Peach State, Goober State, Cracker State, Georgia was named by James Oglethorpe for King George II. Georgia is located in Southeastern United States and is bordered by Tennessee & North Carolina on the north, South Carolina (east), Atlantic Ocean (southeast), Florida (south), and Alabama (west).
At 58,390 square miles, Georgia is the 23rd largest state. The highest point is Brasstown Bald in Towns-Union County at 4,784. The lowest point is the Atlantic Ocean at sea level.
Along the Coastal Plain and in much of the Piedmont, summers are generally hot, and winters are mild. The relative humidity is generally high throughout the year. In the mountains, in northern Georgia, cooler conditions prevail.
Summer temperatures are in the upper 80°s on the Coastal Plain and the Piedmont, and range between 74° to 78° in the mountains. Daytime temperatures are often in the 100° and have risen occasionally to the 110°s F. High humidity makes very hot days exceedingly uncomfortable. Winter temperatures on the Coastal Plain and the Piedmont ranges from about 44° in the north to about 54° in the south.
The highest temperature recorded was 112° while the lowest was -17°.
