The Land
"Land of Lincoln" (1955) because Abraham Lincoln began his political career there. Also known as the Prairie State and Corn State. Illinois was named from the Illinois River, which was named by the French explorer Sieur de La Salle after the Indians he found living along its banks.
Illinois is bordered by Wisconsin on the north, Great Lakes (northeast), Indiana (east), Kentucky (southeast), and Missouri & Iowa (west).
At 56,343 square miles, Illinois is the 24th largest state. The highest elevation is Charles Mound in Jo Davies County at 1,235 feet while the lowest elevation is the Mississippi River in Alexander County at 279 feet.
The highest temperature on record was 117° while the lowest was -35°
