The People
Indiana is a predominantly urban state, with 65 percent percent of its total population living in urban areas in 1990.
Whites constituted 87.5 percent of the population in 2000. Blacks, most of whom lived in urban areas, formed 8.4 percent of the population, Asians 1 percent, Native Americans 0.3 percent, and those of mixed heritage or not reporting ethnicity 2.9 percent. Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders numbered 2,005. Hispanics, who may be of any race, were 3.5 percent of the people.
The 2000 census had Indiana's population at 6,080,485. The State Capital is Indianapolis, other major cities or towns include Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend, Gary, Hammond, Bloomington, Muncie, Anderson, Terre Haute.
