Hawkeye State (for an Indian chief). Iowa was a named from the Iowa River, which was named for the Iowa Indians; the tribal name 'Ayuxwa means "one who puts to sleep".
Iowa is location in the Midwest, westernmost of the prairie states and is bordered by Minnesota on the north, Wisconsin & Illinois (east), Missouri (south), and Nebraska & South Dakota (west, across the Missouri River).
At 56,276 square miles, Iowa is the 25th largest state. The highest elevation is in Osceola County at 1,670 feet. The lowest elevation is the Mississippi Rivers in Lee County at 470.
