The Bay State, Pilgrim State, Puritan State, Old Colony, Baked Bean State, Massachusetts was for the Algonquian Indian words that mean "the great mountain" (Blue Hills) or "large hill place."
Massachusetts is location in the Northeastern United States and is bordered by New Hampshire and Vermont (on the north), Connecticut and Rhode Island (south), New York (west), and the Atlantic Ocean (east)
At 8,262 square miles, Massachusetts is the the 45th largest state. The highest elevation is Mt. Greylock in Berkshire County at 3,487 feet while the lowest elevation is the Atlantic Ocean at sea level.
Massachusetts has a humid continental climate, with long hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures range from 68° to 72°. Winter temperatures vary from 22° to 32°. Cooler Summer temperatures and hotter winter temperatures are experienced coastal regions.
