Wolverine State, Lake State and Lady of the Lake, Michigan was named from Chippewa word majigan, which means "clearing," inspired by a clearing on the west side of the lower peninsula
Michigan is located in the Midwest/Central Lowlands; one of the Northern Great Lakes States
and is bordered by four of the Great Lakes (Michigan, Superior, Huron, Erie) and on the south by Wisconsin, while the Southern Peninsula is bordered on the south by Indiana & Ohio.
At 58,513 square miles, Michigan is the 22nd largest state. The highest elevation is Mt. Arvon in Baraga County at 1,979 feet while the lowest elevation is Lake Erie at 571 feet.
The interior location of Michigan in the northern part of North America results in a continental climate, characterized by four definite seasons with moist, mild to hot summers and snowy, cold winters. The southern region's average winter temperature is 16° while summer average highs can reach 83°. The Northern regions temperature vary 10-12 degrees lower.
The highest temperatures on record was 112° while the lowest was -51°
