The Magnolia State, Bayou State, Eagle State and Border-Eagle State, Mud-cat State, Mississippi was after the Mississippi River, whose Chippewa Indian name means "large river".
Mississippi is located in the Deep South; the central Gulf Coast state and is bordered by Tennessee on the north, Alabama (east), the Gulf of Mexico (south), and Arkansas & Louisiana (west).
At 47,695 square miles, Mississippi is the 32nd largest state. The highest elevaton is Woodall Mt. in Tishomingo County at 806 feet while the lowest elevation is the Gulf of Mexico at sea level.
The climate of Mississippi is characterized by long, hot, and humid summers and generally mild winters. The higher lands in the northeast are usually cooler than other areas of the state. July average temperatures range from about 75° to 78°. Days are generally hot and oppressive, with daytime highs often in the high 90s°.
