The People
Whites constitute 84.9 percent of the population and blacks 11.2 percent. Nearly three-fifths of the state's black population lives within the city boundaries of Kansas City or St. Louis. Asians are 1.1 percent of the people, Native Americans 0.4 percent, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders 0.1 percent, and those of mixed heritage or not reporting ethnicity 2.3 percent. Hispanics, who may be of any race, are 2.1 percent of the population.
The 1998 census had Missouri's population at 5,439,000. The State Capital is Jefferson City, other major cities or towns include Columbia, Joplin, Kansas City, St. Joseph, St. Louis.
