The People
The steady stream of hopeful prospectors from the East and Midwest increased the number to 20,595 in 1870, the year of the first census. Later the silver and copper mines drew Irish, Cornish, and many other immigrants to Butte. A few blacks migrated from the South after the American Civil War (1861-1865). With the settlement of the eastern section by northern European and Slavic groups, most parts of the state were occupied and the population reached 548,889 in 1920.
The 1998 census had Montana's Population at 880,000. The State Capital is Helena, other major cities or towns include Billings, Great Falls, Missoula, Butte-Silver Bow, Bozeman, Kalispell, Havre, Anaconda, Deer Lodge County and Miles City.
