Old North State, Turpentine State, Tarheel State, North Carolina was originally named in honor of France's Charles IX and later in honor of England's Charles I and Charles II.

North Carolina is located Mid-Central Atlantic Coast and the Appalachians. North Carolina is bordered by Virginia on the north, the Atlantic Ocean (east), South Carolina (south), Georgia (southwest), and Tennessee (west).

At 52,672 square miles, North Carolina is the 28th largest state. The highest point is Mt. Mitchell in Yancey County at 6,684 feet while the lowest point is the Atlantic Ocean at sea level.
