The People
Whites constitute 85 percent of the population. Blacks, most of whom live in the Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus metropolitan areas, make up 11.5 percent of the people. Asians are 1.2 percent, Native Americans 0.2 percent, and those of mixed heritage or not reporting ethnicity are 2.2 percent. Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders numbered 2,749 at the time of the census. Hispanics, who may be of any race, are 1.9 percent of the population.
The 2000 census put Ohio's population at 10,847,140. The State Capital is Columbus, other major cities or towns include Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, Dayton, Youngstown, Parma, Canton, Lorain.
