The People
Today, Oklahoma boasts the largest Native American population in the nation (252,420). Many of them are descendents from the original 67 tribes inhabiting Indian Territory, including the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Seminole, Osage, Cheyenne, Sac and Fox, Delaware, Panee and Apache. About three dozen American Indian tribes are headquartered in the state.
In 1990 approximately 98 percent of the people living in Oklahoma were born in the United States. Of the total population in 2000, whites constitute 76.2 percent, Native Americans 7.9 percent, blacks 7.6 percent, Asians 1.4 percent, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders 0.1 percent, and those of mixed heritage or not reporting ethnicity 6.9 percent. Hispanics, who may be of any race, were 5.2 percent of the population.
The 1998 census put Oklahoma's population at 3,347,000. The State Capital is Oklahoma City, other major cities or towns include Tulsa, Norman, and Lawton.
