The Land
The Keystone State, Quaker State, Pennsylvania means "Penn's woods." It was named in honor of Admiral William Penn, whose son, William Penn, founded the colony as a haven for Quakers and other religious minorities in 1682. The state was given its name by England's Charles II in 1680, when the King granted Penn a charter.
Pennsylvania is located in the northern Appalachians and the northeastern Central Lowlands and is bordered by Lake Erie & New York on the north, New York & New Jersey (east), Delaware, Maryland & West Virginia (south), and West Virginia's Panhandle & Ohio (west).
At 46,058 square miles, Pennsylvania is the 33rd largest state. The highest elevation is Mt. Davis in Somerset County at 3,213 feet while the lowest elevation is the Delaware River in Delaware County at sea level.
The highest temperate on record is 111° while the lowest was -42°.
