The People
Whites constitute 85 percent of the people, blacks 4.5 percent, Asians 2.3 percent, Native Americans 0.5, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders 0.1 percent, and those of mixed heritage or not reporting ethnicity 7.7 percent. Hispanics, who may be of any race, are 8.7 percent of the people.
The 1998 census put Rhode Island's population at 988,000. The State Capital is Providence, other major cities or towns include Warwick, Cranston, Pawtucket, East Providence, Woonsocket, Coventry, North Providence, Cumberland and West Warwick.
