The Land
Little Rhody, Plantation State, Ocean State, Rhode Island was named by Dutch explorer Adrian Block whom discovered an island with red clay shores, he named it Roodt Eylandt, meaning "red island". A second theory has it named for the Greek Island of Rhodes.
Rhode Island is located in the Northeast Atlantic Coast and is bordered by Massachusetts on the north and east, Connecticut to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south
At 1,213 square miles, Rhode Island is the smallest state. The highest elevation is Jerimoth Hill in Providence at 812 feet while the lowest elevation is the Atlantic Ocean at sea level.
