The Land
Volunteer State, Big Bend State, Tennessee was named for the Little Tennessee River, which was in turn named for two villages along its shores which the Cherokee called Tanasi.
Tennessee is located in the Appalachians and the Central Lowlands. It is often considered a part of the South and is bordered by Kentucky & Virginia on the north, North Carolina (east), Georgia, Alabama & Mississippi (south), and Arkansas & Missouri (west).
At 42,146 square miles, Tennessee is the 34th largest state. The highest elevation is Clingmans Dome in Sevier County at 6,643 feet while the lowest elevation is the Mississippi River in Shelby County at 178 feet.
The highest temperature recorded was 113° while the lowset was -32°
National Parks & Monuments include Big South Fork, Great Smoky Mountains, Shiloh National Military Park, Fort Donelson National Military Park, and Stones River National Battlefield. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park (partly in Georgia).
