The Land
The Green Mountain State, Vermont was named by French explorer Champlain for a combined meaning of 'Green Mountains' (les monts verts).
Vermont is located in the northwest (New England) and is bordered by New Hampshire (east), Massachusetts (south), New York (west), and Quebec, Canada (north).
At 9,615 square miles, Vermont is the 43rd largest state. The highest elevation is Mt. Mansfield in Lamoille County at 4,393 feet while the lowest elevation is Lake Champlain at 95 feet.
The highest temperature recorded was 105° while the lowest was -50°.
