Mountain State, Panhandle State, West Virginia was named after the western part of Virginia State was annexed during the American Civil War.
West Virginia is location in Central-East (Appalachians) and is bordered by Pennsylvania & Maryland on the north, Virginia (east and south), and Kentucky & Ohio on the west.
At 24,231 square miles, West Virginia is the 41st largest state. The highest elevation is Spruce Knob in Pendleton County at 4,861 feet while the lowest elevation is the Potomac River in Jefferson County at 240 feet.
