The Land
The Badger State (slang for miners), Winconsin was named after the Wisconsin River, whose name, in Chippewa, means "grassy place".
Wisconsin is location in the Upper mid-west and is bordered by Lake Superior and Michigan's Upper Peninsula (across the Menominee River) on the north, Lake Michigan on the east, Illinois on the south and Minnesota and Iowa on the west.
At 56,145 square miles, Wisconsin is the 26th largest state. The highest elevation is Timms Hill in Price County at 1,951 feet while the lowest elevation is Lake Michigan at 579 feet.
The highest temperature recorded was 114° while the lowest was -54°.
