Guidetrip.com Guided Tour Description

Let me take you on a short delhi walking tour through the magnificence and sheer beauty of the history that the Mughals left behind in India.

(16th Century)

Sher Shah Suri’s tragic and surprising death in a cannon blast gave way to the half built Old fort or the Purana Qila. This name was given to it in the 16th century to differentiate it from the Red fort built by the Mughals. The death of Sher Shah provided an opportunity to the second Mughal emperor, Humayun to regain control of Delhi. He was the father of Akbar. Purana Qila also marks the only time of rule of an Afghan ruler in Delhi.

The fort has an impressive and designer two-storied structure called Sher Mandal. This was converted into a Library by Humayun. The fort also houses a mosque built by Sher Shah. Humayun ironically, died after tumbling down these very steps. The body of Humayun was taken a few kilometers away and was buried in what is now known as Humayun’s Tomb. Interestingly, the design of this tomb is precursor to that of the grand mausoleum built by his great grandson, Shah Jahan in Agra called the Taj Mahal. Humayun’s tomb was designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, a Persian architect hand picked by Bega Begum. Bega Begum was Humayun’s first wife (Haji Begum). The commissioning of the tomb was done in 1569-70. This tomb is the grandest structure with a unique feature being that of a garden tomb. This was a first. It is located in NIzamuddin East, Delhi area of India. The tomb is close to Dina-panah citadel which is famously known as Purana Qila (Old fort). The new fort, also know as Lal Qila, was founded by Humayun in 1533. It was the first structure of its kind to use red sand stone on such a large scale.
