Brazil

Language

Portuguese is the official language of Brazil. Except for the languages spoken by Indian tribes living in remote reservations, Portuguese is the only language of daily life. Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking country in South America.

Portuguese is also the official language of Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guiné-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé e Principe.

Portuguese became one of the official languages of the European Union (EU) in 1986, when Portugal joined the organisation.

In 1996 the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP in Portuguese) was created, aiming to foster cultural co-operation among member countries, reach agreements regarding standard form in Portuguese usage, and raise the profile of the language around the world.
